The 270 XT Awning Mk2 is a freestanding 270-degree vehicle awning designed for 4x4 touring and camping in Australian conditions. Featuring a reinforced B-Tech™ Alloy frame and 315gsm rip-stop canvas, it offers 8m² of wraparound shade and fast setup. The awning includes a waterproof storage bag, mounting brackets, and guy ropes. Compatible with rooftop tents and modular wall kits for extended shelter.
The 270 XT Awning Mk2 by The Bush Company is a high-performance freestanding 270-degree awning engineered for durability, rapid deployment, and full integration with touring setups. Designed for overlanders and 4WD travellers, this awning delivers advanced weather protection and convenience with unmatched structural strength.
Constructed with The Bush Company’s exclusive B-Tech™ Alloy frame and reinforced stainless steel hinges, the 270 XT Awning Mk2 is purpose-built to perform in Australia’s toughest environments. The gusseted arms provide superior torsional strength, enabling the awning to stand freestanding in windy conditions without relying on poles.
Its rugged construction resists vibration fatigue on corrugated tracks and holds firm against gusts, delivering long-term reliability for remote touring and off-road adventures.
The awning canopy is made from 315gsm rip-stop poly-cotton canvas, pre-treated for water resistance, mould and mildew protection, and UV stability. A unique single-seam design eliminates unnecessary stitching across the canvas, significantly reducing potential leak points and increasing waterproofing efficiency.
Reinforced attachment points and triple-stitched sleeves add further durability, helping the canvas withstand repeated use and exposure in variable climates.
The 270 XT Awning Mk2 offers a fast one-person setup in under 30 seconds. Thanks to its self-supporting structure and premium hinge mechanism, you can deploy shelter without complex poles or frames. The included guy ropes and pegs add additional security during strong wind conditions but are not required in mild weather.
This combination of quick setup and minimal reliance on support poles makes it ideal for 4WD owners seeking a reliable, easy-to-use solution for touring, camping, and off-grid exploration.
Covering up to 8 square metres, this freestanding awning provides wraparound shade ideal for camp kitchens, rest zones, or gear storage. A 50mm triple-stitched Velcro strip along the inner edge supports modular wall kit attachment, allowing you to fully enclose your setup for added protection and privacy.
Compatible with solid and mesh wall kits, this awning adapts to changing weather, terrain, and use cases—making it a versatile choice for extended stays or mobile basecamps.
The 270 XT Awning Mk2 is engineered for integration with Bush Company rooftop tents via the optional Awning To Tent Bracket. Its 2.3m packed length fits standard roof racks, and the included heavy-duty PVC bag is oversized for easy repacking, even in wet or dusty conditions.
Mounting hardware includes adjustable L brackets for secure vehicle installation. With compatibility across Bush Company’s modular ecosystem, this awning supports a fully integrated setup for serious 4WD touring.
2 Heavy DutyAdjustable L Brackets. One fitment bracket must be attached to the stainless steel head stock at the hinged end of the awning. The second bracket must be mounted no less than 1.3m /4′ 3″ from the bracket at the hinged end.
It is recommended that the rear non trussed arm is secured using the included guy ropes and pegs to prevent excessive upward movement in all weather conditions.
Use guy ropes attached to 1-tonne webbing straps between the awning arms to manage water runoff and prevent pooling in heavy rain.
Avoid leaving up during snowfall to prevent canvas stretching.

Yes The 270XT MAX Freestanding awning can be installed at home. Due to its weight, you may require an additional person to help with lifting and bolting into place.
No - In general you don't require poles for the 270XT MAX awning. We do however recommend using the supplied poles with the awning walls (poles supplied with awning wall purchase)
If you're mounting it to your roof rack, you'll need at least 1.9m (6'3") in length. For extra support, we suggest adding a third bracket in the centre of the awning.

I did a ridiculous amount of research in choosing the 270XT, and it has not disappointed. There are a few slightly larger and lighter options on the market, but when the wind is howling and its bucketing it down you want the strongest on the market every time. The whole thing is absolute quality, thick canvas, a single seam so it does not leak, well thought out wear points, hard wearing powder coat and quality welds, the list goes on. The customer service from initial queries about bracket positioning to after sales contact has been exceptional. Freight was quick and reasonable. I have just got back from a 5 day trip to the Holland Track and it was up morning, noon and night, every night without a worry. We measured 35kph winds on the last day, with a few gusts of 50kph and it did not falter. It was easy to see the difference in quality and stability when placed directly next to a cheaper Chinese awning, 20kph winds had them stopping what they were doing and reaching to grab the awning but the Bush Company did not move. The first time I had it up I actually could not believe how strong the arms are when you grab them on the ends, I thought something else must be holding this up, but when they move a little in the videos know they are giving it a decent tug. Super cool underneath the thick canvas too. I've retrofitted mine with dimmable LED lights and a touch switch which was quite easy to do, and also some stick on Velcro dots to hold the straps out of the way from the doors (a sewn in one would be better though- an easy upgrade for future revisions). It's actually very reasonable in price when you consider you have to pay $340 for decent brackets for just about every other awning on the market, the adjustable stainless brackets provided are definitely worth keeping. The only thing I was a little disappointed at was the PVC bag, in all the videos the canvas bag did seem like a great option considering how its roomy, breathable, double wear points etc, but a few phone calls later I realise it was a genuine upgrade as the PVC wears a lot better overall and does not leach onto the vehicle like the older canvas bags. A month or so old and its no longer super shiny and plastic looking so it now looks perfectly fine on the car, it was also a little tight to fold up at the start, but starting to wear in nicely now and I can get it zipped up quite easily. I was also a little thrown off by the backing plate, as it is now an all solid extruded aluminium backing plate rather than the welded aluminum frame in all of the pictures- I am not too sure at whether this is an upgrade or downgrade (any changes in weight/strength etc?) as there's not really any information on it, but it did throw me off as there were no pictures, videos or mention of that changing along the way- it possibly should have been marketed as a mk3 as its quite a significant change. FWIW I weighed the awning at around 25kg by itself, and 3x brackets were about 5kg, so 30kg all up if you go for 3x brackets. Still glad I chose the original XT and not the max for my uses, as there's just something about its simplicity, and its so rock solid. Being a solo/duo camper I only need the space the regular XT provides, but we did manage to fit 5x guys under it to get out of the sun and rain on several occasions. Overall a few tiny gripes but I thoroughly recommend the awning and would not hesitate to buy again.
10/10 service and product. I had high expectations for the 270xt awning and it has exceeded all of them ??
After researching a lot of 270 awnings on the market. The Bushcompany 270xt mk2 awning was an easy winner for me. Build quality and customer service are second to none. Highly Recommend+++++++++++
An extremely strong and well built awning. Just back from Bedourie where wind was constantly blowing 20 to 30km per hour. No need to tie down no flapping or noise. Provides a great shade area with total clearance from ropes or stays. Often out bush on bird surveys where quick and good shade cover is essential. Can not recommend this product enough.
I purchased one of these because several of my friends recommended them. However my 2023 MU-X has a rear lifting door that goes too high. So I had to go back to a standard awning - just check if you have an SUV before you wreck the back door. Perfect for utes.
