12.2m² (131 sq ft) of shade across a 6067 × 3100mm (19'11" × 10'2") footprint, wrapping your vehicle from the front door right around the rear, with no poles touching the ground. Roll into camp, swing the arms into position and secure the tension straps on the outer arms to the vehicle to tension the canvas: in under 30 seconds the whole camp is covered.

What makes the MAX different

Both our 270s are freestanding; the difference is in the pivots. The 270 XT Mk2 runs a single pivot: fast, simple, 8m² (86 sq ft), and ideal for solo or duo touring on shorter racks. The 270 XT MAX Mk2 runs two pivot points and a forward-folding front section. That second pivot pushes coverage out to 12.2m² (131 sq ft), with more shade along the front and side of the vehicle than the 270 XT Mk2. And unlike the 180 XT MAX, it wraps round the rear as well.

The MAX weighs 33.5kg (73.9 lb) (the 270 XT Mk2 is 27.8kg (61.3 lb)) and needs a 1.8m (5'11") minimum mounting spread (the 270 XT Mk2 needs 1.1m (3'7")). If you run a wagon, troopy, van or canopied ute and want the whole camp covered, the MAX is the one. If you're working with a shorter rack, the 270 XT Mk2 gives you the same freestanding 270° design in a more compact package.

Freestanding, rated to 50km/h

The B-Tech® Alloy main arms are fully gusseted for maximum strength and carry the load themselves, while the front and rear arms have a honeycomb cross-section along their full length for torsional strength without extra weight. The canvas stays tensioned with nothing on the ground: nothing to trip over at night, sink into soft sand or rattle loose on corrugations. It's rated to 50km/h freestanding and to over 90km/h when poled, guyed and pegged down securely. Guy ropes and pegs are included.

Pack-down is the same movement in reverse, and the oversized 450gsm (13.3 oz/yd²) PVC bag means you're not wrestling wet canvas back into a tight sleeve while the weather closes in.

One seam across 12.2m² (131 sq ft)

The awning is made from 315gsm (9.3 oz/yd²) acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas cut from an ultra-wide roll, so all 12.2m² (131 sq ft) is built with a single seam. Fewer seams, fewer leak paths. It's tested to a waterhead of more than 1000mm (ISO 811:1981), treated for UV, mould and mildew, with triple-stitched sleeves and reinforced attachment points at every load-bearing corner. Wet it down before its first trip so the core-spun thread swells and seals the stitch holes.

Stainless steel headstocks and B-Tech® Alloy frame

Each end of the awning is built around a stainless steel heavy-duty headstock that retains the stainless steel hinge pin shafts for the arms. The headstocks carry the full load of 12.2m² (131 sq ft) of open awning into the vehicle mounts, so this is where an awning's strength is won or lost. Stainless steel resists the salt that eats plated hardware on beach runs, keeps the arms swinging freely through dust and corrugations, and holds its shape under load.

The frame is The Bush Company's own B-Tech® Alloy extrusion with a powder-coated finish. Extruded alloy resists the torsional flex that cracks welded frames on corrugations. Australian owned and designed, and manufactured in South Africa in conditions as hard on gear as outback Australia.

Mounting to your rig

It ships with threeheight adjustable heavy-duty stainless steel L brackets. An L bracket must be mounted to the stainless steel headstock at each end of the awning. The third bracket is only needed when mounting to load bars or a roof rack, not a rooftop tent, and normally goes towards the centre of the awning. You need at least 1.8m (5'11") between the two headstock brackets. Most full-length platform racks, load bars and canopy racks clear this; some rack systems need extra hardware. Packed, it's 2300mm (7'7") long × 230mm (9.1in) high, with a frame 170mm (6.7in) wide, so it sits low, inside a standard roof line.

It suits dual cab utes, 79 Series and wagon platforms, Troop Carriers, van conversions, canopied utes and camper trailers: anywhere with 1.8m (5'11") of mounting spread. Running a Bush Company rooftop tent? The optional Awning-to-Tent brackets mount the awning directly to the tent for a tidy, low-profile setup.

A quick check before you order

As with any roof-mounted gear, it's worth adding up the awning (33.5kg / 73.9 lb), brackets, rack and anything else you carry up top, and confirming the total sits within your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating. If you'd like a lighter option, the 270 XT Mk2 (27.8kg / 61.3 lb) or the 180 XT MAX (26.5kg / 58.4 lb) use the same canvas and the same B-Tech® Alloy frame.

Build it into a room

A 50mm (2in) strip of genuine Velcro® brand loop runs the entire length of the valance around the outside edge of the awning. It's rated to hold 3kg (6.6 lb) per 50mm (2in) length, so it's ideal for securing awning walls. Using Velcro rather than a zip along the awning also means there's no zip to rub against the canvas when the awning is packed tightly away in transit. Run one canvas wall or mesh wall as a windbreak on the exposed side, or add the 270 XT MAX Wall Kit (five walls plus a front arm wall) to turn 12.2m² (131 sq ft) of shade into a fully enclosed room. The single walls have full-length YKK spiral zips on both sides, so you can zip canvas and mesh walls together to increase coverage as required.

Usage guidance

  • In windy conditions, use the supplied guy ropes and pegs on the non-trussed arms to prevent upward movement.

  • Lubricate the hinge pins in the headstocks regularly to keep the arms moving freely, especially if you use the awning often in salty coastal conditions.
  • Don't leave it up in snow: the weight stretches the canvas.
  • Wet the canvas down thoroughly before first use.

Care & Maintenance

Using & Caring For Your Awning

Before Use:

We recommend that new awnings are thoroughly wet down before first use. This lets the core-spun stitching thread swell and seal the stitch holes, so your awning performs well in wet weather.

Deploying & Packing Away:

  • When unzipping the awning, make sure the zippers are right to the top of the bag at each end and that the bottom corners of the bag are not caught on the awning frame.
  • When deploying your awning if the canvas seems excessively tight, STOP and check that the canvas is not caught at the headstock and that it has not slid too far one way in the sail-track on the awning frame.
  • When packing the awning away, ensure that the canvas is not pinched between the awning arms, especially close to the headstock.

Cleaning Canvas & PVC Bag:

  • To clean canvas use a soft brush and cold water.
  • Do not expose to petrol, oils or harsh chemicals.
  • The PVC bag can be cleaned with standard car wash cleaning solution.

Cleaning mould:

Your awning canvas is pre-treated with mould and mildew resistance, but if mould/mildew does occur please follow these steps:

  • Allow mould to dry.
  • Remove surface mould with stiff bristle brush.
  • Vacuum the area.
  • Treat area with Oil of Clove spray (diluted spray can be purchased or can be mixed using a few drops of oil into a spray bottle of water).

Regular Maintenance & Checks:

Like any accessory used in extreme conditions regular maintenance is required to ensure the longevity of your awning, including:

  • Inspect the stainless steel headstocks to identify any bolts that may need re-tightening.
  • Lubricate the hinge pins in the headstocks regularly to keep the arms moving freely, especially if you use the awning often in salty coastal conditions.
  • Ensure that the awning canvas is correctly located in the sail-track on the backing frame to eliminate excessive tension on the canvas.
  • Inspect the attachment of the canvas to the ends of the awning arms.
  • Inspect canvas to identify any wear marks caused by incorrect packing of the canvas.

Choose the side you want the awning to deploy from. Most tourers fit it to the side their camp kitchen or canopy door opens onto. A LH Awning is on the passenger side of a right hand drive vehicle.

2 years conditional.

Can I add walls?

Yes. A 50mm strip of genuine Velcro® brand loop runs the entire length of the valance around the outside edge of the awning, rated to hold 3kg per 50mm, ready for canvas and mesh wall kits, so you can run a single windbreak or fully enclose the space.

Does it need poles?

No. Poles are only recommended when you're running the optional awning wall kits, and those poles are supplied with the wall kit.

How heavy is the awning?

33.5kg (73.9 lb), before brackets. As with any roof-mounted gear, check the total against your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating.

Can I install it myself?

Yes. Because of the 33.5kg (73.9 lb) weight you'll want a second set of hands for lifting and bolting. Fitting instructions are available in our Guides & Instructions section, or any Bush Company stockist can fit it for you.

What roof racks is it compatible with?

Any rack or set of load bars giving at least 1.8m between the two headstock brackets. The frame is The Bush Company's own B-Tech® Alloy extrusion with a powder-coated finish. Extruded alloy resists the torsional flex that cracks welded frames on corrugations. Australian owned and designed, and manufactured in South Africa in conditions as hard on gear as outback Australia.

Mounting to your rig

It ships with three height adjustable heavy-duty stainless steel L brackets. An L bracket must be mounted to the stainless steel headstock at each end of the awning. The third bracket is only needed when mounting to load bars or a roof rack, not a rooftop tent, and normally goes towards the centre of the awning. You need at least 1.8m (5'11") between the two headstock brackets. Most full-length platform racks, load bars and canopy racks clear this; some rack systems need extra hardware. Packed, it's 2300mm long × 230mm high, with a frame 170mm wide, so it sits low, inside a standard roof line.

It suits dual cab utes, 79 Series and wagon platforms, Troop Carriers, van conversions, canopied utes and camper trailers: anywhere with 1.8m of mounting spread. Running a Bush Company rooftop tent? The optional Awning-to-Tent brackets mount the awning directly to the tent for a tidy, low-profile setup.

A quick check before you order

As with any roof-mounted gear, it's worth adding up the awning (33.5kg), brackets, rack and anything else you carry up top, and confirming the total sits within your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating. If you'd like a lighter option, the 270 XT Mk2 (27.8kg) or the 180 XT MAX (26.5kg) use the same canvas and the same B-Tech® Alloy frame.

Build it into a room

A 50mm strip of genuine Velcro® brand loop runs the entire length of the valance around the outside edge of the awning. It's rated to hold 3kg per 50mm length, so it's ideal for securing awning walls. Using Velcro rather than a zip along the awning also means there's no zip to rub against the canvas when the awning is packed tightly away in transit. Run one canvas wall or mesh wall as a windbreak on the exposed side, or add the 270 XT MAX Wall Kit (five walls plus a front arm wall) to turn 12.2m² of shade into a fully enclosed room. The single walls have full-length YKK spiral zips on both sides, so you can zip canvas and mesh walls together to increase coverage as required.
