LX27 Gen 2: our lightest hard shell rooftop tent

The LX27 Gen 2 is built for touring rigs where weight and height matter. At 81kg (178.6 lb) (without the ladder) and 175mm (6.9in) high when closed, it's the lightest and lowest profile tent we make. That helps with roof load, fuel use, wind noise and garage or car park clearance.

Open it up and, at its highest point, there's 1.6m (5'3") of headroom, or about 1,520mm (4'11.8") measured from the top of the mattress, so two adults can sit up, get changed and sleep comfortably.

Up in 30 seconds

The clamshell closes on our own custom-made, heavy-duty over-centre latches, made from stainless steel, and they have holes for a padlock so you can lock the tent.

Undo them, let the gas struts lift the aluminium clamshell, then slot the 8mm (0.3in) spring steel poles into place to hold the rainfly out over the doors: the whole setup takes about 30 seconds. There's 70mm (2.8in) of clearance above the mattress when it's closed, so standard bedding, sheets and sleeping bags stay stored right inside the closed tent between camps. That saves space in your vehicle and keeps your bedding clean and dust free.

Comfort inside

The 70mm (2.8in) mattress (2.05m (6'8.7") long × 1.27m (4'2") wide) has 30mm (1.2in) of memory foam on top of a 40mm (1.6in) high-density foam base, which gives a firm foundation that resists bottoming out. The two layers are joined together inside a removable, zippered canvas cover, over a marine carpet underlay designed to help reduce condensation beneath the mattress.

  • Doors: large front and side doors make getting in and out of the tent easy. Each has an outer canvas door, an inner canvas door and midge mesh. Every canvas door and midge mesh has YKK spiral zips.
  • Ventilation: the inner canvas doors let you control ventilation from inside the tent without opening the midge mesh screens, and a mesh-covered vent above the rear door keeps air moving when you've closed everything up.
  • Roof storage: two roof pouches and a clear tablet pouch.
  • Side storage: four large canvas side pouches, each with a heavy-duty mesh pouch on the outside, so there are eight side pouches in total. The mesh pouches make it easy to see what's in them, like your phone or keys.
  • Water bottles: two heavy-duty mesh water bottle holders. Together, the pouches keep the small things off the mattress.

Power and light, already wired

  • Lighting: dimmable tri-colour LED strips at the head and foot, with the main control panel at the foot and extra switches at the entrance.
  • Outlets: two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports and two 12V sockets at the foot of the mattress.
  • Power input: from your vehicle through the 50A Anderson plug under the tent, or through the internal 20A WAECO input socket.
  • Optional fan: the Sirocco fan mount plate installs inside the tent on pre-fitted rivnuts in one of the internal beams that reinforce the roof, ready for a Sirocco II 12V fan.
  • Cable channels: zippered canvas channels run up the inside of the roof to keep wiring for fans and lights neatly stored, so nothing gets caught when you close the tent.

Built light, not weak

The frame is our B-Tech® Alloy extruded aluminium with seam-welded corners. Light as it is, it will still carry any of our freestanding awnings, mounted on the tent with the LX27 awning to tent brackets.

The body is dual-layer 260gsm (7.7 oz/yd²) acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas, treated against mould, mildew and UV. The two layers work like double glazing: the air gap between them insulates better against heat and cold and significantly reduces condensation build-up on the inside of the tent walls. They also make it a blackout fabric that adds weather resistance and blocks out light, so the tent stays darker at sunrise.

Automotive-grade rubber seals keep the tent dust free and watertight when it's closed.

A large, removable one-piece rainfly with 8mm (0.3in) spring steel poles and adjustable storm straps covers the doors in wet weather.

Why the rainfly matters

  • Dry entry and exit: it covers the ladder and entryway, so you can get in and out safely without getting soaked or bringing dripping water inside.
  • Extra weather protection: it's an extra layer of defence against heavy rain, stopping water pooling directly against the main tent canvas or doorways.
  • Airflow in wet weather: it shields the openings, so you can keep windows or vents cracked open for fresh air without rain splashing inside.

Carry more on top

The internally reinforced roof is rated to 100kg (220.5 lb) dynamic when closed and 35kg (77.2 lb) when open, subject to the rating of whatever the tent is mounted to. Ezi-Slot channels in the roof and sides take our accessories without drilling:

As with any roof-mounted gear, add up the tent, your rack or canopy and anything carried on top, and confirm the total is within your vehicle's and rack's dynamic roof load ratings.

Getting in and out

The tent comes with a 2.6m (8'6.4") Compact Telescopic Ladder with angled steps and two ladder brackets: one pre-mounted at the open end of the tent, and one you can mount to either side. You can climb in through the open end or from the side, whichever suits your vehicle setup.

Install your tent

The LX27 Gen 2 comes with:

  • six fitment brackets, three for each side, which mount to the side of the foot rails to secure the tent to your load bars
  • two adjustable foot rails, 20mm (0.8in) high, which run the full length of the tent underneath it and don't need to be fitted for every installation

You can fit the tent the usual way, with the open end at the rear of the vehicle, or in reverse, with the open end facing forward and the ladder secured to a roof rack on the cab. If you fit it in reverse, the Rooftop Tent Dead Bolt Bracket is required, for extra protection against the tent opening while you're driving.

See our rooftop tent mounting options for canopies and low-profile setups. For fitting, follow the instructions in the Installation tab.

Care & Maintenance

Rooftop Tent Care and Maintenance

We recommend that new rooftop tents are opened and the canvas wet down on the outside before first use. Do not spray water onto the air vent above the rear door. This will ensure that your rooftop tent performs flawlessly in wet weather by allowing the poly/cotton core spun thread and canvas to swell ensuring the take up of any potential leaks in the stitching.

Regular Maintenance

  • Lubricate the tent seal with silicon gel and clean seal mating surface thoroughly to prevent the seal from 'sticking' to the tent frame.
  • Check for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, tears, or loose stitching in the tent fabric, midge mesh and seals.
  • Inspect zippers, gas struts, hinges for smooth operation and lubrication.

Cleaning Canvas:

  • Do not use soap or detergents on the canvas.
  • Do not store the product if wet, allow drying first.
  • To clean use a soft brush and cold water.
  • Do not expose to petrol, oils or harsh chemicals.

Cleaning Mould From Canvas:

The canvas of The Bush Company Tents is treated during manufacturing with a mould and mildew inhibitor, but in the event that your tent canvas develops mould please follow the steps below to remove it:

  • Allow mould to dry
  • Remove surface mould off with a stiff bristle brush
  • Vacuum the area
  • Treat area with Oil of Clove spray (diluted spray can be purchased or can be mixed using a few drops of oil into a spray bottle of water)

Condensation:

Condensation is a natural occurrence, the combination of cold nights and warm days can create a lovely environment for mould and mildew to develop. This is not because of bad seals but from temperature changes combined with humidity creating condensation inside the tent.

When in use, reduce condensation build-up, keep some of the windows open to increase airflow.

After your trip, make sure you allow the tent to fully dry inside and out. If you are not using your rooftop tent for an extended time (more than 10 days) open the tent regularly to air it out, and possibly remove the mattress and store it separately until your next trip.

Tent Frame Care

To ensure the longevity and aesthetic appeal of your powder coated surfaces, regular care and maintenance are essential. Factors such as pollution, dirt, salt, and exposure to strong ultraviolet (UV) light can gradually impact the quality and integrity of the coating over time.

Cleaning Recommendations:

  • Remove Loose Dirt: Begin by gently removing any loose dirt or deposits from the surface using a wet sponge. This initial step helps prevent scratching during the cleaning process.
  • Use Mild Cleaning Solutions: for general cleaning, utilize a non-abrasive brush or cloth along with a ph-neutral car wash product such as Rig Wash from Revival Offroad to keep the surface of the tent if good condition. These solutions effectively remove dust, salt, and other deposits without causing damage to the powder coating.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: after applying the cleaning solution, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water. This step ensures the removal of any residue or cleaning agents that may be left behind.

Powder Coat Treatment

We recommend that at a minimum of once every six months or if your powder coat surface is fading, the powder coat should be treated with a dedicated powder coat restorer such as Rig Revive. Follow the application directions on the product you select.

Recommended Cleaning Frequency:

  • For general use we recommend cleaning and powder coat treatment every six months as a good practice to maintain appearance and coating integrity.
  • If your tent is used regularly for beach camping we recommend cleaning the tent after each trip as you should your vehicle.
  • If your tent is located in an area with high exposure to pollutants or intense UV radiation from being outside all the time, it should be cleaned and the powder coat treated approximately every three months.

 Important Considerations

Avoid Harsh Detergents: Steer clear of detergents that recommend the use of gloves when handling, as they are usually harsh and may be unsuitable for cleaning powder coatings. Instead, opt for a good quality car wash and wax or a similar mild cleaning solution.

Caution with Solvents

While certain solvents are recommended for removing sealants or other building residues, they can potentially harm the extended life of the powder coated surface. To minimise risks, it is best to avoid using solvents unless absolutely necessary. If paint splashes, sealants, or other residues need to be removed, you can safely use methylated spirits, turpentine, or white spirits. However, be cautious as their use may still have long-term effects that may not be immediately visible and could take up to twelve months to appear.

Powder Coat Paint Repair

If the powder coat surface of your tent is damaged and needs to be touched up we recommend the following:

Stacked with features

COMPACT, LIGHT AND COMFORTABLE

The LX27 Gen 2 is our low-profile touring tent: just 175mm high when closed and 81kg without the ladder. Inside, 30mm of memory foam sits on a 40mm high-density foam base that resists bottoming out, making for a comfortable night, and standard bedding, sheets and sleeping bags stay stored right inside when you latch it closed. With 1.6m of headroom at the highest point, there's plenty of room to sit up and move around.

ROOM ON TOP, FOR MORE ADVENTURES

The internally reinforced roof is rated to 100kg dynamic when closed, so you can carry solar panels, boards or recovery tracks, and it will still open with 35kg on top. Ezi-Slot channels in the roof and sides take our accessories without drilling. As with any roof-mounted gear, check the total is within your vehicle's and rack's dynamic roof load ratings.

BUILT LIGHT, NOT WEAK

The frame is our B-Tech® Alloy extruded aluminium with seam-welded corners, and light as it is, it will still carry any awning in our range. The body is dual-layer 260gsm acrylic-treated polyester ripstop canvas: the air gap between the layers works like double glazing to insulate and significantly reduce condensation on the inside walls, and the blackout fabric resists the weather and blocks light. A large rainfly with 8mm spring steel poles and adjustable storm straps covers the doors in wet weather.

UP IN 30 SECONDS

Undo the custom-made, heavy-duty stainless steel over-centre latches, let the gas struts lift the clamshell and slot in the spring steel poles to set the rainfly: the LX27 Gen 2 is ready for the night in about 30 seconds. Leave your bedding, sheets and sleeping bags inside when you pack up, and keep the space in your 4WD for everything else.

THE PIONEER’S CHOICE

Made in South Africa, they’ve earned a reputation as the real deal—proven in the harshest conditions and respected by overlanders worldwide. FAQS

How much does the LX27 Gen 2 Rooftop Tent weigh?

About 81kg (178.6 lb), excluding the ladder and the foot rails, which weigh 3.4kg (7.5 lb) for the pair.

What are the dimensions of the LX27 Gen 2?

Closed, it's 2.25m (7'4.6") long, 1.39m (4'6.7") wide and 175mm (6.9in) high, or 195mm (7.7in) high with the 20mm (0.8in) foot rails fitted. Including the hinges, handles and gas struts, it measures 2.32m (7'7.3") by 1.45m (4'9.1").

Open, at its highest point, it gives 1.6m (5'3") of headroom, or about 1,520mm (4'11.8") above the mattress. The mattress is 2.05m (6'8.7") long, 1.27m (4'2") wide and 70mm (2.8in) thick.

How much can I carry on the roof?

The roof is rated to 100kg (220.5 lb) dynamic when the tent is closed and 35kg (77.2 lb) when it's open, subject to the rating of whatever the tent is mounted to. As with any roof-mounted gear, add up the tent, your rack or canopy and anything on top, and confirm the total is within your vehicle's and rack's dynamic roof load ratings.

Can I leave bedding inside?

Yes. There's 70mm (2.8in) of clearance above the mattress when the tent is closed, so standard bedding, sheets and sleeping bags stay stored right inside. For bulkier bedding such as thick doonas, the AX27 and the TX27 range have more room.

Is there a video of the LX27 Gen 2?

Yes. Our LX27 Gen 2 product video walks through the tent in detail, including its dimensions, canvas, mattress, power and lighting, mounting rails and ladder.

How do I install or mount the LX27 Gen 2?

It comes with six fitment brackets, three for each side, which mount to the side of the foot rails to secure the tent to load bars. The two adjustable foot rails don't need to be fitted for every installation, and we have other mounting options for roof racks and canopies. The Bush Company or one of our stockists can fit it for you. If you're fitting it yourself, follow the rooftop tent fitting instructions and watch our Pre-Install Assembly video first.

LX27 Gen 2 Lightweight Rooftop Tent

$6,750.00

LX27 Gen 2: our lightest hard shell rooftop tent

The LX27 Gen 2 is built for touring rigs where weight and height matter. At 81kg (without the ladder) and 175mm high when closed, it's the lightest and lowest profile tent we make. That helps with roof load, fuel use, wind noise and garage or car park clearance.

Open it up and, at its highest point, there's 1.6m of headroom, or about 1,520mm measured from the top of the mattress, so two adults can sit up, get changed and sleep comfortably.

Up in 30 seconds

The clamshell closes on our own custom-made, heavy-duty over-centre latches, made from stainless steel, and they have holes for a padlock so you can lock the tent.

Undo them, let the gas struts lift the aluminium clamshell, then slot the 8mm spring steel poles into place to hold the rainfly out over the doors: the whole setup takes about 30 seconds. There's 70mm of clearance above the mattress when it's closed, so standard bedding, sheets and sleeping bags stay stored right inside the closed tent between camps. That saves space in your vehicle and keeps your bedding clean and dust free.

Comfort inside

The 70mm mattress (2.05m long × 1.27m wide) has 30mm of memory foam on top of a 40mm high-density foam base, which gives a firm foundation that resists bottoming out. The two layers are joined together inside a removable, zippered canvas cover, over a marine carpet underlay designed to help reduce condensation beneath the mattress.

The two layers work like double glazing: the air gap between them insulates better against heat and cold and significantly reduces condensation build-up on the inside of the tent walls.
